This is a great recipe that is not only frugal, but so good you will not be able to keep your hands off it! I have seen this sell in store for nearly $10 and I must say, the homemade version is much better.
You will need:
Butter for bowl and spoon to prevent sticking
Candy thermometer
10 cups popped popcorn
1/2 cup pure maple syrup (needs to be pure maple syrup)
1 cup nuts or your choice (we like pecans and slivered almonds)
- Butter the inside of a large bowl, plus a large mixing spoon. Set aside. Then line a large baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper. Set aside you will use this last.
- Pour the maple syrup into a deep-sided, heavy-bottomed sauce pan. Then over medium-high heat, bring the syrup to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to medium and continue to boil until it reaches 236 degrees on a candy thermometer.
- Place the popcorn and nuts into the buttered bowl. Slowly pour the hot maple syrup over the top of the popcorn/nuts and quickly stir until all of the popcorn is coated with the syrup. You should move quickly but handle the coated popcorn gracefully because it is hot and will burn you if you splatter or spill it.
- Pour the popcorn onto the prepared baking sheet and spread into a single layer. Allow the popcorn to cool and set. This can take about an hour depending on the temperature of your home.
- Enjoy, or store in an airtight container.
