6Check out this easy peasy (or should I say cheesy?!) homemade Deep Dish Pizza Casserole! Super yummy and super fast and easy to make! You can customize this recipe to your liking by adding your choice of meat or veggies or even different varieties of cheeses. Just be sure to use precooked meat.

Ingredients

1 (13 ounce) Pillsbury Pizza Crust

1 1/2 cups pizza sauce

2 1/2 cups of your favorite cheese (I like using a mix of provolone, mozzarella and cheddar)

1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

12 whole pepperonis (optional)

1/2 pound cooked ground spicy Italian sausage (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
  2. Unroll the pizza dough, and press it into the bottom and halfway up sides of prepared baking dish.
  3. Spread the dough with some pizza sauce and, if using, sprinkle the cooked spicy Italian sausage over the top. Cover the pizza with cheese and then top with pepperoni (if using). Sprinkle the Parmesan over top.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with more Parmesan if desired. Serve immediately.

  • Buttermilk Blueberry Bread

    homemade blue berry bread

We love blueberries in our family.  Blueberry bread, blue berry scones, you name it.  This is a great recipe that can be made ahead of time for a brunch or just for a yummy desert with some vanilla ice cream.  It will also be one that your friends and family will be asking you the recipe for when they take their first bite!

    Ingredients

½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
2 tsp. lemon zest or more — zest from 1 large lemon (wash first)
    3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar
    1 egg, room temperature
    1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup of this to toss with the blueberries)
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. kosher salt
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    2 cups fresh blueberries
    ½ cup buttermilk

To make homemade buttermilk on the fly,  place 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup. Fill cup with milk until it reaches the 1-cup line. Let stand for five minutes. Use only 1/2 cup of the prepared mixture for the recipe or make a double recipe and use all (this bread freezes well)

    1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Cream butter with lemon zest well and add the flour of the sugar until light and fluffy.  Don’t skimp on this step, it helps the texture of the cake.

    2. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Toss the blueberries with ¼ cup of flour, then whisk together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt, then add the cinnamon.

    3. Add the flour mixture to the batter a little at a time, alternating with the buttermilk. Fold in the blueberries.

    4. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan with butter or coat with non-stick spray. Spread batter into pan. Sprinkle batter with remaining tablespoon of sugar. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes.

Check with a toothpick. If necessary, return pan to oven for a couple of more minutes. (Note: Baking for as long as 10 minutes more might be necessary it all depends on your oven).

Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

  • 12 Amazing Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide Around Your House

    peroxide

I never fully appreciated 3% hydrogen peroxide until recently. My husband uses if for multiple uses around the house and would buy it by the gallon if he could. He swears by its magical powers and advocates for the liquid’s ability to clean without leaving dangerous residue or toxic fumes.

As I bought several bottles of the power cleaner during a recent buy-one-get-one-free sale, I wondered what other uses this liquid might have, and here’s the list I came up with.

    1. Remove laundry stains

Pre-treat stained white fabrics with hydrogen peroxide before laundering the stained items. The peroxide works like bleach, without the fumes, as it removes stains, brightens whites and disinfects laundry.

    2. Lift baked-on grease from pots and pans.

When you combine hydrogen peroxide and baking soda into a paste, it easily rubs onto dirty pans. Allow it to sit for an hour or two, and then scrub the pan with warm water and a scrubby sponge. The nasty baked-on food will easily lift off, and your baking dishes will sparkle like new.

    3. Highlight your hair

Mix a 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water solution, and then spray it on your hair to create highlights.

    4. Cut grease and sanitize dishes.

Simply add 2 ounces of it to your dishwasher detergent or to your regular dish soap bottle, and wash dishes as usual.

    5. Extend the life of your salad greens

One-half cup of water combines with one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide prevents wilting and preserves your leftover salad.

    6. Use it to kill bacteria in your mouth

When you brush your teeth with a hydrogen peroxide, salt and baking soda paste, it kills bacteria and whitens your teeth. Mix it with water to freshen your breath.

    7. Disinfect cutting boards, sponges and toothbrushes

Pour a small amount on your cutting board, and let the bubbles fizz for a few minutes. Then, wash and rinse your cutting board as normal. Likewise, soak your sponges in a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water. They’ll be clean and ready to rinse and use after 10 minutes. Clean your toothbrushes too. After every use, and especially after an illness, soak your brushes in full strength hydrogen peroxide to disinfect and clean them.

    8. Clean the shower

Spray the shower surfaces with hydrogen peroxide, and kill viruses and bacteria. It also removes soap scum and mildew from shower curtains when you wash the curtains with your bath towels and regular detergent followed by one cup of full strength hydrogen peroxide during the rinse cycle.

    9. Clear acne

One dab of hydrogen peroxide dries pimples and helps to clear your skin.

    10. Remove ear wax

Add a few drops of olive or almond oil to your ear and follow it with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Wait a few minutes, and then tilt your head. The solution and wax drain out.

    11. De-skunk your pets

That obnoxious odor is no match for a mixture of one-quart hydrogen peroxide, one teaspoon Dawn dish detergent, one-quarter cup baking soda and two quarts warm water.

    12. Reduce fungus

When you spritz your plants with water and hydrogen peroxide, fungus won’t grow on your prized flowers and vegetables. The same mixture kills foot fungus and aquarium fungi (use sparingly to protect the fish).

With all these benefits, I think I’ll jump onto the hydrogen peroxide bandwagon. From now on, I’ll attach squeeze nozzles onto several bottles and store them in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. What’s your favorite way to use hydrogen peroxide?

  • Homemade Maple Popcorn

    maple popcorn

This is a great recipe that is not only frugal, but so good you will not be able to keep your hands off it!  I have seen this sell in store for nearly $10 and I must say, the homemade version is much better.

    You will need:

Butter for bowl and spoon to prevent sticking

    Candy thermometer
    10 cups popped popcorn
1/2 cup pure maple syrup (needs to be pure maple syrup)
1 cup nuts or your choice (we like pecans and slivered almonds)

    • Butter the inside of a large bowl, plus a large mixing spoon. Set aside. Then line a large baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper. Set aside you will use this last.
    • Pour the maple syrup into a deep-sided, heavy-bottomed sauce pan. Then over medium-high heat, bring the syrup to a boil.
    • Reduce the heat to medium and continue to boil until it reaches 236 degrees on a candy thermometer.
    • Place the popcorn and nuts into the buttered bowl. Slowly pour the hot maple syrup over the top of the popcorn/nuts and quickly stir until all of the popcorn is coated with the syrup. You should move quickly but handle the coated popcorn gracefully because it is hot and will burn you if you splatter or spill it.
    • Pour the popcorn onto the prepared baking sheet and spread into a single layer. Allow the popcorn to cool and set.  This can take about an hour depending on the temperature of your home.
    • Enjoy, or store in an airtight container.
